DECEMBER RIVER

So dark the river runs
Between snowbanks and whitened trees
This steel gray stream
an ice-edged sword.
Cutting the banks where Summer's green
so short a time ago was hung
lapped by a soft and gentle stream,
but now a silver colored sword
so cutting dark December's river gleams.
